Information and Registration

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) called upon for the legal profession to ensure its members receive appropriate cultural competency training, to better understand the history and legacy of residential schools, and to learn more about the rights of Indigenous peoples and Indigenous law. Members of the profession have responded positively to the calls to action of the TRC, and in doing so have come to appreciate that reconciliation will take time and commitment. The relationship between the justice system and Indigenous peoples has had its challenges and presents the question “What can we do differently?” In the interests of moving reconciliation forward, this critical question is the theme of this unique bench and bar event.

The event aims to give lawyers and judges a unique opportunity to increase knowledge and awareness about the challenges faced by Indigenous people within the justice system. Lawyers and Judges in the Northwest Territories will hear from practitioners, academics, justice system participants, community leaders and service providers about restorative justice and reconciliation. The program is intended to highlight Indigenous voices and to encourage participants to think about what we can do differently and better understand the challenges faced by people involved in the justice system. The event will take place outside courtrooms and offices and within the Yellowknives Dene community of Dettah. There will be a visit to the Arctic Indigenous Wellness Centre and two book club sessions offered as a prelude to the event. The goal is not only to educate, but also to bring people together with a view to improving in the justice system’s relationship with Indigenous peoples. Hours will count towards CPD and ethics.
